Through online to offline worker organizing and building broader alliances, advance corporate social responsibility campaigns to move policymakers and low-wage industries to create good jobs.
OUR is a national organization that elevates the voices of those employed in the retail sector to challenge corporations and policy makers to provide family‐sustaining jobs for all working people. We leverage technology — social media and our digital platform, WorkIt — to support people working in retail and bring them into community with one another. Through our online peer networks and on‐the‐ground base‐building strategies, we build the leadership of working people to share their stories and advocate for real solutions to the pressing needs of the country’s massive low‐wage workforce. By sharing our innovations, we are supporting the development of capacity across the progressive movement for base building, campaigning and leveraging technology for social impact.
OUR is most known for OUR Walmart and Rise Up Retail. OUR Walmart is a national organization of current and former Walmart workers centered that has achieved national scale and impact through an innovative fusion of workplace based and on-line outreach and education as well as strong community partnerships. Rise Up Retail develops the leadership of workers across the sectors and runs high impact campaigns notably the current fight to hold Wall Street accountable for the bankruptcy of Toys R Us and subsequent layoffs of 33,000 people. Hundreds of leaders around the country anchor OUR’s work engaging a network of 200,000 with a reach of 2 million working people. OUR members organize for racial, gender and economic justice by supporting each other, sharing information around rights and resources, advocating for improved workplace conditions, sharing their stories publicly, proposing policy improvements, participating in intensive leadership training, and building alliances with community partners.
