Online to Field Organizer
Location: Accepting applications nationally and will hire the strongest candidate, though candidates in the California Bay Area, Seattle, North Carolina, Chicago, Minnesota, New York City, and New Jersey preferred.
The Organization United for Respect (OUR) seeks a dynamic online to offline organizer to provide strategic support and implementation of our digital strategy to organize hourly retail employees, activate allies and win game changing campaigns that ensure family-sustaining jobs for working people.
Through online to offline worker organizing and building broader alliances, advance corporate social responsibility campaigns to move policymakers and low-wage industries to create good jobs.
Organization United for Respect (OUR) is the industry voice of working people employed on the front-lines of America’s largest low wage retail corporations. OUR has a growing base of over 150,000 people employed at the country’s largest employers. We develop their leadership and amplify their voices of working people to advocate for solutions to the pressing needs of the country’s massive low-wage workforce.
Our strategy brings people into community with one another through digital innovation and deeper engagement in neighborhoods across the country. OUR’s success derives from our investment in developing high level leadership from its base and using creative organizing strategies that rely heavily on online tools to connect people into communities of peer support and action.
OUR is most known for OUR Walmart, a national organization of current and former Walmart workers that has achieved national scale and impact through an innovative fusion of workplace based and on-line outreach supported by strong community partnerships. Hundreds of leaders around the country anchor OUR Walmart’s work, and tens of thousands Walmart employees across all 50 states are engaged with OUR Walmart’s online organizing systems and tools. OUR Walmart members support each other, share information around their rights and resources, advocate for improved workplace conditions, share their stories publicly, propose policy improvements, participate in intensive leadership training, and build alliances with community partners.
Scope of work:
Building and managing a national network of retail workers online. Specific platforms we use to connect retail workers include Facebook, peer to peer texting, Instagram and our digital app WorkIt.
Developing and building committees of workers across the retail industry and key states ready to take publication after coming to OUR through an online entry point.
Managing relationships with our alliance partners specifically to help develop strategy and activate workers in policycampaigns seeking to raise wages and win a fair workweek, family leave and earned sick time.
- Minimum of 2 years organizing or campaign experience, ideally with organizing workers and using digital strategies
- Excellent communication, writing and organizational skills
- Self-motivated and dedicated – proven ability to work independently and overcome obstacles
- Ability to work well with diverse organizations and communities
- Understanding of issues facing communities of color, women and low-and moderate-income families
- Willingness to learn new organizing strategies i.e. think outside the box
- Ability to travel is a must
- Ability to speak Spanish is a plus
Salary Range: $46,000 to $65,000 annually depending on experience and location.
