UFR State Lead Organizer - New Jersey

United for Respect (UFR) is a national organization building an industry voice of people working for the country’s largest retail corporations. Through scaled leadership development and base-building, UFR’s growing network is challenging major corporations and policymakers to provide family‐sustaining jobs for all working people. We leverage technology — social media and our digital platform, WorkIt — and bring the retail workforce into a shared community of support and advocacy.

United for Respect is seeking a State Lead Organizer for New Jersey to drive and build worker leadership with a scaled activated base for economic and racial justice. Our campaigns focus on raising workplace standards by protecting jobs from Wall Street and automation, winning $15, a fair workweek, family leave, earned sick time and equitable workplaces free of sexual harassment and racial discrimination. Key policy initiatives that this position will be responsible for moving in states include, but are not limited to:

  • The Fair Workweek Initiative (FWI) which is driving the growing momentum to restore a workweek that enables working families to thrive and have input in their weekly schedules. FWI leaders successfully won fair workweek policies in Oregon, Seattle, San Francisco, New York City, Philadelphia, Emeryville, San Jose, and Chicago.

  • The Stop Wall Street Looting Initiative which is protecting retail jobs from Wall Street’s predatory practices. UFR’s leaders are actively fighting to pass legislation to prohibit Wall Street’s profiteering at the expense of working families, and advocating for severance pay nationwide.

Job Responsibilities:The State Lead Organizer will work as part of the Organizing team at United for Respect. Working in collaboration with the core States Policy Campaign team and the Policy/Political department, the State Lead Organizer will:

  •  Advance state campaigns that improve the lives of workers in low wage jobs while transforming how retail operates, including winning a fair workweek and protecting jobs from Wall Street looting and automation.

  • Build a broad base and strong leadership of people working across major retailers and in key states to support each other to enforce their rights and advance policy and industry change campaigns through UFR’s online to field organizing model that includes online social media communities, peer to peer texting, field outreach, and our digital app WorkIt.

  • Develop and build leadership committees to drive public and corporate policy campaigns through an inclusive process that develops their organizing and advocacy skills, generates bold actions, moves policy makers and educates the public.

  • Develop the leadership of working people to share their stories with each other and publicly, with the media and online.

  • Work in collaboration with the policy and political department to build and maintain political relationships with state elected officials, key stakeholders and other state/local policy allies to support campaigns, our members, and core organizing work.

  • Work with the staff and partners to organize actions, press events and prepare testimony for public hearings.

  • Help build internal state policy campaign infrastructure with the states campaign team, including development of strategic plans, new opportunities and lobbying support.

  • Participate in strategy development and planning to grow the organizing program and advance campaigns.

  • Collaborate with communications and digital teams to amplify worker leadership and stories online, in the media and for advocacy.
